Department of Industrial
Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry in
collaboration with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Office
of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (CGPDTM)
organized an Awareness Programme on Intellectual Property Rights for
Industry on 10th January 2009 at Indore. This was the first of a series
of 14 IPR awareness programmes to be conducted in different cities of
India by the CII in the next two months.
While inaugurating the seminar, Shri Rajendra Prasad, Chairman, CII
Madhya Pradesh State Council stated that the awareness programmes is a
curtain raiser of the efforts of the Government of India to sensitize
the industry on IPR matters. He mentioned that the awareness programme
would addresses the important issue of leveraging Intellectual Property
for Knowledge Based development and national wealth creation that has
immense significance and implications on our economy and society. Shri
T.C James, Director, DIPP, stated that the awareness programme is part
of the National Campaign on IPR sensitization launched by the Government
of India on 26th April, 2006, the World IP Day. The objective behind
this campaign is to demystify the subject, ‘Intellectual Property’. He
observed that IP literacy has now become a basic requirement for doing
business. IP, he further stated, has become a powerful tool for wealth
creation. IP protection plays an important causative role in
innovations. Countries with high innovation quotient have been making
rapid progress. He stressed the need for a developing a healthy IP
culture which balances the rights of innovators and safeguards public
interests. Shri James also apprised the meeting of the efforts made by
the Government of India during the last few years to modernize the IP
regime in the country. Shri Subodh Kumar , Head, IPR & APTDC stated that
realizing the importance of IP and the fact that IPR is one of the key
issues confronting the Indian industry, CII has constituted National
Committee of IP Owners with special focus on IPR protection &
enforcement. Through this Committee, CII has been spearheading some of
the major initiatives in IP such as training & awareness generation and
protection & enforcement measures across the Country
Technical sessions were addressed by Shri T. C. James, Director DIPP,
Shri. Rajiv Bhirud, Chief, R&D & Environment, TATA International Ltd.,
Dr. S. S. Singh, Assistant Controller of Patents & Designs, Dr. Swati
Bal Tembe, Vice President & Head Patent Department, Piramal Life
sciences, Shri H Y Mehta, Advocate, Indore High Court and Dr. Prithpal
Singh, Examiner of Patents & Designs. The technical sessions focused on
various forms of IPRs, procedures of securing IPRs, management of IPRs
and case studies of exemplary efforts made by small and medium
enterprises and rural communities to protect their innovations a well as
traditional knowledge based industries. During the technical sessions,
the participants got an opportunity to interact with the Intellectual
Property Office officials to clarify their doubts about filing and
processing of IP applications.
The awareness programme was attended by around 100 participants from
various sectors like industry, academia and legal professionals. |
